Hi, I’m Georgie,

Mum, midwife, child and family health nurse, and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I’ve spent years supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding and now, as a mum myself, I truly understand just how complex and emotional this time can be.

Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. I offer compassionate, evidence-based breastfeeding support that meets you exactly where you’re at.

Whether you’re preparing for your baby’s arrival, navigating early feeding challenges, or needing guidance with milk supply or latch issues, I’m here to help you feel calm, confident, and truly supported. No judgment, no pressure, just personalised care that works for you and your baby.

I thought I’d re-introduce myself 👋

I’m Georgie, also known as The Latch Lady. I’m a mum, midwife, child and family health nurse, and lactation consultant (IBCLC) based in Sydney’s Inner West. 💕

I started The Latch Lady earlier this year, and I am so humbled by the women and families I’ve supported so far. It’s such a privilege to be invited into this intimate and vulnerable season of life.

My own breastfeeding journey had its challenges, and it really shifted how I see infant feeding. I know it can be hard, and I’m not here to tell you what’s right or wrong, but to guide you in a way that feels right for you and your family.

Every parent deserves to feel confident and supported, whether breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or a mix of both.

Don’t cry over “spilt” milk… repurpose it instead!
If you’ve got breastmilk that’s past it’s feeding life (like leftovers in a bottle, or milk that’s been in the fridge or freezer too long), it doesn’t need to go to waste. Instead of tipping it down the sink, add it to your baby’s bath. It can help moisturise and soften their skin.

Other ways you can use breastmilk :
▫️ On dry skin or eczema
▫️ For mild nappy rash
▫️ On cradle cap
▫️ Sticky eyes

As a midwife and IBCLC, whenever I feel like I’m coming down with mastitis symptoms, I don’t muck around!

Mastitis can often be managed without the use of antibiotics if treated early.

I was super lucky in this instance and managed to nip it in the bud and felt back to normal that afternoon.

This World Breastfeeding Week, I’m honouring the 2025 theme: “Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.” Because when communities stand beside breastfeeding mothers by listening, supporting, nourishing, the impact ripples across families, women and generations.

It’s been so wonderful to be working at @birthtimeworld The Village, offering space, care and continuity for all families wherever they are in their feeding journey.

I also want to acknowledge that breastfeeding is not always possible, and for many, it’s not a simple or easy choice. It can be full of joy, grief, resilience, pain, and pride. It’s never taken lightly.

What free support services have you found helpful in the early weeks?

Ever heard the phrase “start with the main, then offer dessert”? When it comes to breastfeeding, imagine your breasts like dinner plates.

Once your milk supply has settled in, starting with the opposite breast to the last feed can help ensure both sides are getting equal love and stimulation over the course of the day. This can support a balanced supply and prevent over/underuse of either side.

✨ Every baby and breast is different — so remember, this is just one option. In some cases, block feeding or switch feeding may be more appropriate (especially with high or low supply concerns).

I still can’t quite believe I get to do this work and with my own midwife, @midwifejohunter ! The very woman who held me (literally and emotionally) through my own birth is now my colleague. Life really knows how to come full circle.

Being a midwife is the greatest honour. Bearing witness to women in their power: birthing, roaring, rising—is nothing short of extraordinary. It’s raw. It’s wild. It’s magic.

I’m endlessly grateful to Jo for showing me what true, woman-centred care looks like—and for inspiring me to return to this work with a full heart.

Whether it’s holding space in birth or supporting a new mum through the waves of early breastfeeding, I truly feel like I’ve found my place. And I can’t imagine ever doing anything else.

Have you ever breastfed in the bath?

There’s something so calming about warm water and skin-to-skin in the bath. Bath feeding has been one of the most special ways for me to connect with my little one - especially on the tough days.

If you’re navigating breast refusal or feeling overwhelmed, a bath feed can work wonders. The warm water relaxes both of you, helps soften the breast, and encourages those lovely, instinctive feeding behaviours. No pressure, just presence.

Gentle, soothing, and often just the reset you both need.

Breastfeeding but still feeling that pinchy latch?
Here are 3 quick tips to help baby get deeper on the breast (without needing a full re-latch every time!):
1. Tummy-to-mummy – baby’s whole body should be facing you
2. Tuck that little bottom in close
3. Gentle pressure between the shoulder blades helps bring baby in snug

Still feeling pinchy? Pop a clean finger in to break the latch and try again. A deep latch = a more comfortable feed for you and bub.

Lymphatic Drainage for Mastitis Relief & Breast Comfort

Did you know you can support your breasts through mastitis, engorgement and rapid changes in pregnancy with the gentlest of touches?

Lymphatic drainage massage helps reduce swelling by encouraging lymph fluid to move—decreasing edema and softening any areas of fibrosis or firmness.

Here’s the technique I’m demonstrating in this video:

• Start with ten light circles where the internal jugular and subclavian veins meet (just under your collarbone)
• Then, ten light circles in your armpit (axilla)
• Follow with gentle strokes from the nipple toward the collarbone and armpit
• Think: “patting a cat” – super soft, lifting the skin to allow fluid to flow

You can begin this in pregnancy if you’re experiencing rapid breast growth, and it’s beautiful support postpartum too—for engorgement, blocked ducts, or mastitis.

Ice, Ice, Baby!

Mastitis brings heat, swelling, and pain - but ice can be a game-changer! ❄️ Applying ice packs frequently (even every hour if needed) helps reduce swelling, ease discomfort, and support healing.

🔥 While heat might feel soothing, it can actually make inflammation worse. Try reaching for ice first instead!

✨ Nip Tip: Soak a clean disposable nappy, pop it in the freezer, and voilà—the perfect breast ice pack! It molds to your breast for maximum relief.

Skip the Deep Breast Massage!

Did you know that deep massage to your breast can actually make mastitis worse? It can lead to more inflammation and swelling - ouch!

Avoid using:
🚫 Deep tissue massage techniques
🚫 Electric toothbrushes, massagers, or vibrating devices on your breast
🚫 Aggressive pressure on the breast

Instead, gentle is best! The most effective method is lymphatic drainage, which uses light, sweeping motions towards your lymph nodes to help reduce swelling and improve comfort.

Did you know your bra choice can impact mastitis?

✅ A well-fitted, supportive bra helps prevent swelling (lymphedema) and reduces back/neck pain.
❌ Bras that are too tight or restrictive can worsen inflammation and discomfort.
💨 Choose soft, breathable fabrics to keep your breasts comfortable.

I feel so passionately about this because I personally got mastitis from sleeping in a bra - lesson learned the hard way! If your bra feels too snug, leaves red marks, or digs in, it might be time for a better fit. Comfort is key.
